Friday the 13th- Update- Count down to SNE- 12170VPPs

Friday the 13th- Update- Count down to SNE- 12170VPPs

Not exactly the greatest day, actually I think had one of the worst sessions/days this month. . . which in itself is both brag as well as a beat =P. Thought Fridays were particularly . . . "soft" so decided to fire up 200nl-Zoom which didn't go too well. Also busted 900/2000 in a Big 55$ MTT ; AJ vs AT 12bb deep. What can you expect. . .

Played about 6.5 hours today; 3.3k VPPs, bit of a downswing.

Though I'm not down a ton; I felt like I was outplayed in a ton of pots and got owned in a lot of cooler/bad situations.

Not exactly the healthiest of nutrition choices. . but I figured I need a treat now and then =)~ It is after all the holidays!

Very likely taking half or whole day off tomorrow to hang with friend. ~

As always Best of luck to everyone else on the tables !

Happy Holidays ! =)! 11-days till Christmas !

Month End Review - November #Disaster Strikes

November Review- December Goals
Poker

It's been awhile since I've updated my blog and hopefully the graph to the left will illustrate sort of the reason. Unlike the beautiful results that I've attained in October. This month started off as a disaster and didn't really result in my full recovery. Thankfully for the Pokerstars VIP system I somehow managed to end the month in the positive despite the atrocious results on the tables.  I took 4-5 days off in November attempting to freshen my mind from the continuous downswings that never seemed to cease.

The Numbers

Now as you can see to the left 200nl was a complete disaster for me. Considering the small sample size along with the "negative" "ev winrate" it's pretty easy to conclude that I played awful and ran just as awful. I ended up making 127859.19 VPPs for the month. Full-Ring Zoom is a breeze as usual, my 6-max game deteriorated. Approximately 255 hours on the tables as well. This worked out to be 18$/hour after losses despite the ridiculously poor performance on the tables.

Lessons

Butchering my Game Plan- I made every single possible mistake possible last month. I played late into the night with the notion of "chasing my losses", lost track of what a profitable game was, and spewed relentlessly. It had began bad to the point that I had other players on the table commenting on how my play is so much worse/ different than before. The FOLD button also seems to magically disappear from my field of view while on a downswing and been replaced by the "Shove or Call option".

You don't have to win every pot- If only I could have repeated this to myself while on the tables. . . countless amount of money would have been saved. My biggest losing day for the month I had dropped almost 4x the amount more than my biggest winning day. (-5.7k vs +1.6k) . Neglecting stop losses and constantly peeking at my graph mid-session resulted in poor performance on the tables and self inducing tilt.

Variance is variance, let it go- What is variance and what isn't?. Let's just take a breather and assume that my plays were 100% best to my abilities and 0% tilt-play was involved. Well had I run at "Expected Value", my month would have been at approximately +9.4k. Had I run 4.6k above rather than below, I would have ended the month at +14k profit.

Stop blaming variance- Rather complimentary to my previous lesson. There's a line, sometimes a thick line sometimes a thin line between variance and poor play.
eg. I call a 6bet-shove with 9Ts and lose to AK-Situation 1
eg. I call a 5bet-shove with KK and lose to AA-Situation 2
In almost 95% of the cases situation 2 is "variance" situation 1 is "bad play". Despite having more "equity vs the hand" in situation 1. There's a pretty clear line of the two hypothetical examples I gave is variance/bad play. As ranges become thinner and thinner it becomes less conclusive whether a play is poor or good.

That being said, I don't think that my game has "evolved" to that level of strategy; nor do I think that the skill levels at small stakes (100-200nl) have reached the epitome of poker.

*Note to self* - Don't overestimate fold equity or thin value. It's an easy sure fire way to kick up variance through the roof.

Goals for December

  • Hit up the gym 4-5x a week.
  • Hit Supernova Elite
  • Work on maintaining A-Game and hopefully recover from "november Downswing"
  • Manage Time much better
  • Have lots of fun "It is the holidays"
  • 3evbb/100 - 200k hands -
  • Not checking my results relentlessly. (Hopefully just once a day. . then couple days. . then week.)

Disaster Strikes- Week 1 -November

To start off; the month was more or less alright; I had several terrible (F-Game sessions).

F- Game is something much worse than C-Game, whereas C-game is just me trying to win every single pot without regards for what hand I have. . . .

F-Game is me trying to play as many pots . . whether not I win or lose.

The majority of the run-bad occurred at 200nl-6 max ZOOM. As you can see. . in a single week I cranked out close to 100k hands. . which is a result of me grinding way too much. Playing an excessive amount of volume is a heavy contributor to not playing my most optimal.

I'm planning to drop 200nl for a few days and grind it out at the lower stakes (100nl FR - 6max) . . this is probably the biggest downswing I've had since the end of September where I also experienced a 6k drop.

In terms of "big blinds". I'm down about 35 bi's for the month and about 25 bi's below ev. . . absolutely atrocious. I was completely taken by surprise at the craziness of variance this month.

Hopefully I can cut down on the grinding just a tad bit and update a little bit more throughout next week.

I'm currently sitting on about 858k VPPs, (33k for the month). Dropping 200nl for now will definitely put a small dent in my VPPs for the year; however I'm sure that it will be a huge benefit to my win rate.

Being on a downswing is a terrible feeling. . . it's a cold and dark place where all you actions are clouded with doubt. It feels as if you can't win a single pot, and that you don't even know how to play poker. . (actually).

Hopefully by the end of this week I will have regained my confidence and have a solid game. I notice that results orientation can have a huge impact on fluctuations in one's game.

It's so easy to start trying to change everything about your game-plan even though it's just variance coming on. More often than not; I'm finding that the changes that I make are hurting my game more than helping. . .

Best of luck to everyone else on the remainder of your grinds !! ,

See ya on the tables !

Breaking out of that Downswing

Couple days ago I had a few sessions where I dropped "cumulatively close to 30bi's. Almost a 50/50 split between terribly spews and running absolutely bad.

Took only 1.5 days to drop 30bi's and nearly 3 days to climb all the way back up. Luckily I ran into some Friday/Saturday Heat and was able to climb out of this hole.
Total VPP count for the month is 65k
Hopefully will end the month with 95-100k VPPs if not a bit more. Will be looking to take a few shots at 200nl if I'm feeling adventerous =X.

Good luck at the tables everyone ! =]

#Downswings#Worst 2 Sessions of Month

#Downswings#Worst 2 Sessions of Month

Graph on the left was me pulling an all nighter in attempts to get back on pace to SNE. As you probably have noticed from my week 1 Review. I was falling quite behind on VPPs for the month and desperately needed to catch up if I wanted any chance at all in finish SNE before the holidays.

Same thing happened today; as I was attempting to grind those extra VPPs and such while playing during the "low hours" as well as being super tired the inevitable downswing slapped me in the face so hard. Spent a good portion of the night trying to get unstuck and hopefully even.

Lesson: If avoidable never grind during the lowest pool / player hours of the day. Avoid pulling all night grind sessions.

Hopefully I'll latch on to some weekend run-good an bank a nice giraffe for my Mid-Month Review. ! ~

Graph to date will not be posted until then; though do keep in mind those are just 2 of my all nighter session downswings for the month.

Given that I've been posting nothing but upswings so far I don't want people to get the wrong idea that you never have "bad sessions/bad days" in poker.

For the most part~ these 2 major downswings were a huge result of grinding late at night; not during peak hours and of course tilting a little bit here and there.

As Always~

Good luck to everyone else on the tables!!
May the RUNHOT be always in your favour =)~

#SUNDAY DOWNSWING#VIP MATCH UPDATE

When I woke up today around 1:30pm PST I was absolutely choked at the fact I've completely missed the VIP MATCH and gotten blinded out. . .

Upon checking my email after breakfast I noticed that PokerStars informed me that I came 4th in the VIP Match with Chris Moneymaker. . . one of those inexpressible moments of shock and surprise.

I decided to request my tournament history for this particular event and this is what came.

You finished in 4th place (eliminated at hand #105122224041).

103 hands played and saw flop:
- 0 times out of 16 while in small blind (0%)
- 1 times out of 16 while in big blind (6%)
- 0 times out of 71 in other positions (0%)
- a total of 1 times out of 103 (1%)

Pots won at showdown - 0 out of 1 (0%)
Pots won without showdown - 1

Today's grind session was just absolutely terrible. Just nearing the end of the day when the FR-ZOOM tables broke down I should have called it a down . . but instead proceeded to chase my losses a huge mistake that resulted in me taking part in -EV, overly aggressive, spewy plays.

The last couple hundred hands I literally dropped 8bi's so fast that it felt like every bluff was being caught and every value-bet was being folded to. Every single time I got dealt AK it felt as if I ran into AA.

Given that I've ran so insanely good for the earlier part of the month a downswing was bound to hit in, however as most of my downswings are today was a preventable case. After going through my database I realized that variance alone and neglecting spews; I would've easily still broken even for the day.

Note to self: To not chase losses. . . =/.

Very upset with my play today especially nearing the end of the day, very upset with my mindset in chasing losses. Very upset with oversleeping and not being able to actually partake in "physically playing" the VIP Match. Hopefully tomorrow will be much better.

! Good luck to all!

Remember to not spew, not tilt, and run hot ! =]

See you on the tables.

Go over to Peter's Blog and check out the post he made regarding a hand that I got involved with him.

September Review- October Goals- $13,000+ Month, 60bi Downswing, 470k Hands.

Poker

The month started and ended off pretty terrible. Week 2-3 was the best run of my life; had close to a 8k upswing.

Week 4 around hand 350k-470k was nearly 100% due to my excessive volume, degen spewing, and overall poor performance.

After taking a short shot at 200nl-ZOOM that didn't go so well; my play changed dramatically. Over-aggression and attempt to win every single pot with marginal hands created immense variance that tore my Win Rate to shreds.

The Numbers

~ 133k VPP's
470,024 Hands Played
$2425 (EV$5428)

the graph calculation is based off of 47% rakeback which is more or less 500-600k VPP mark.

Calculated at the SNE rate averaged out; It's approximately 13k in rakeback. In which case the total net profit should be closer to 15-16k after rake back

Goals for October

  • Continue working out 4-5x a week
  • Earn at least 100k VPP's
  • Win profits at the tables ; increase winrate
  • Work on Mental Game "Tilt"
  • Try and Update Blog several times a week
  • Manage time a lot better

$13,000+ Month, 60bi Downswing, 470k Hands.
Bring it on October.

Best case scenario I'll make :
10k+ Profits
100k+ VPP
no downswing over 10-20bi.
A smooth upward sloping graph~ . =)

Weekend Update - Last Week of September - #The Final Sprint

Weekend Update - Last Week of September - #The Final Sprint

My graph is contrary to popular belief that weekends are the softest of the week. Unlike the expected 20-30bi upswing most people would like to believe ''actually happened'' quite the opposite.

With the influx of recreational players doing the most odd and peculiar thing, it was also the most tilting period of the week. Being unable to justify or reason why a player made a horrific play and beat you is very mentally distraught. All though I ran much below ev as the graph suggests

I'm not for one putting blame on just run bad; and in all honesty have played absolutely horrific in several sessions where I spewed uncontrollably. Sunday was particularly bad for me, the coveted "Red-Line" at Small Stakes Cash games is almost 100% due to me: bluffing much too frequently, value betting way too large, not having any of my big value bets called down.

One more week left in September.

Let's Review our September Goals!

Volume Goals [x]
Tilt [ ]
Time Management [ ]
Profits [x]

For the remainder of this week I'm hoping to play as much A/B- Game as possible and keep spews and tilt to a minimum.

A particular thing to remember I think is, A-Game's tend to be a little more high variance than B-Game; due to the pushing of small edges. It is also worthwhile to note that as a grinder it's quite important to not only improve your A-Game as much as possible but also to improve your autopiloting-B-Game and minimize if not eliminate your C-Game.

With that in mind, later on in my sessions it'd be very beneficial to stray away from high variance plays that may be marginally profitable in the long run.

Good luck to everyone else ! =)

Time for another Downswing- September 18th Update

September 18th the day started off more of a run-bad and variance stricken period where I was unable to win a single pot over 50bb.

Nearing 2/3 of the way through the day I started playing very poorly being much too overly aggressive with marginal holdings and spewing a ton of buy ins to fish and other regs.

Nonetheless I think it is very important for oneself to keep in mind "Where the Money is Coming From" and how some of the very marginal spots may not exactly be the most profitable in the long run. I also think it is quite beneficial to sacrifice some ''marginal ev spots'' as the cost of having a lower variance game overall.

Anytime when volume is a high priority, having high variance can usually result in shaky play and confusing ranges to oneself. Undoubtedly this itself can create excessive mental strain and tilt that is detrimental to my overall game;

Simply put. Spending too much energy chasing the pennies, instead of pitching a large net for the gold.

Hopefully today will be much better off~

Recovery- Pace to $10,000 Month - 30bi Downswing- 123k BreakEven Stretch-

The Downswing

After the last little bit of upswing that occurred on Saturday, Sunday and Monday leading to Tuesday midnight(morning) were followed by back to back relentless downswings. At around hand 22k mark to hand 26k mark things started to start looking bright again until the continuous strings of losing flips and 60/40 as well as 80/20's. By the end of this 37k stretch of pain and death I was completely overwhelmed with wreck.

Luckily for me the following day was a create relief as we finally experienced some upswing. Decided to not skimp out on exercise and went back to the gym before this session that continued. Also mainly due to my internet being down for the majority of the day I was unable to start my grind for Tuesday until around 9pm-Pst.

Taking advantage of the small pool size for FR-Zoom that ran all night I was able to win a few pots here and there.

After yesterday's grind that lasted from 9pm until 7am; my sleep schedule was unfortunately tampered. Due to that, my grind for Wednesday started around 8pm and led onward until about 5am of the next-day.

Today was quite hectic for me as the Full-Ring Zoom tables were not running and in return I was to play a mixture of 6-max Zoom Tables as well as Full-Ring reg-speed tables. I believe for the majority of my grind today it was a 4-zoom -6max, 2-3 tables of Heads-Up, and 9-10 tables of Full-ring Reg Speed. The heads-up tables were mainly a result of attempting to start games at Full-Ring but due grinding during the less peaked hours of Poker Stars the tables did not start as fast as usual.

I was curious to find that my combination of playing 6-Max Zoom and Full-Ring Regular Speed tables was a lot less VPP's / Hour than my preferred mix of 6-8 tables of zoom 100nl. I don't really prefer one combination over another, however I do prefer to get a higher rate of VPP/Hour as it'll allow me to reach my goal of SNE with much less strain.
[ x ] 1200$ below ev
[ x ]  146k Hands
[ x ]  35.7k VPPs
[ x ] Just shy of half a month.

For the remainder of the month, I will be very intent on having a good schedule for grinding as well as a solid exercise and diet regime.

As for the numbers go I think it's very discouraging to make a monetary goal especially in the short-term sense. I do hope to :

Average out another 13-15k hands per day for the remainder of the month.
Lift weights 4-5x a week, try and increase/maintain big compound lifts (Deadlift, Squat, Military Press, Db Press)
Keep a Clean Diet
Lose about 0.75-1.25lbs a week lower body fat.

*~ On a Side Note, as WCOOP is in town, I'm curious as to see how the state of the games would be affected by the additional influx of recreational players. I'm rather leaning towards thinking that WCOOP would make the games much more profitable (Promotional Wise) as opposed to the previously despised Happy Hours.

August End Review - In the Red

August End Review
The month started off pretty well as usual, unfortunately around 2 weeks in I had met a huge 40bi downswing. This was definitely a mixture of playing poorly, running bad, and playing way too many tables with short-handed and heads-up against regs.

After dropping down stakes to 50nl for a couple days and throwing back in 100nl I decided to mix a bit of 6 max in the game as well.  Being more or less break even for the latter half of the month was not a fun period of time to be in do to massive swings and such.

Some things however I did notice was that when I turned off skype and other distractions from my sessions the winnings were in the positive and vice-versa for when it became late at night. This phenomenon may come across as blatantly obvious however, needless to say sometimes we all get a little bored and want some side entertainment while working.

The month ended for me behind in both volume as well as table profits. Luckily for PokerStars VIP program I alloted 49,624.88 vpp's were earned in this period of time, as well as hitting my 600k VPP milestone nearing the beginning of September this year, this made up a huge chunk of profits in the aftermath for me.

Goals For September
  • Put in a little bit more volume and keep on pace with SNE
  • Make table profits Pre-Rakeback
  • Workout 5-6x a week
  • Mix in 6-Max games along with my grind sessions
  • Update more regularly

And the Downswing Continues.

The downswing is inevitable and just continues going downwards.

Only way to beat it is to slowly grind it out I figure.

Interesting things to notice is that the majority of my downswings are when I am really tired and end of the day grinds as well as when I'm playing 24 tables.  4 tabling zoom with 12 tables of reg speed; or 6 tabling zoom just doesn't seem as mentally strenuous as I don't need to keep track of multiple hands at the same time i figure. ~ Hopefully go on a heater in the last 2 weeks.

Downswing & Coping with Downswing

You Don't Always Win, Just More than you Lose

The first thing that may come to your notice is the steep drops from hands; 15k to 18k; 20k to 25k, and 31k to 36k. It's not a mere coincidence that these 5-15bi drops are near the end of ever session of each day that I played.

As I mentioned relentlessly in previous posts that I've been falling behind in the Supernova Elite Chase; and as a result I have been attempting to compensate by playing approximately 11-12k hands a day instead of the 7-8k hands.

My Grind Hours are typically 3-4 session; 12pm-->2pm; 2pm-->6pm; 6pm--8pm; 10pm-->2am.(Pacific Standard Time) . The sessions typically get worse and as the later the time goes and the player pool dies out. Whenever the player pool dies out it becomes very natural and obvious to begin starting tables 'Heads-Up' as well as playing a lot of short-handed games which are super high in variance.

Verdict: Although being around 9bi's below ev it is unfair to attribute my downswing 100% to ev. The sample size of 35k hands is also very insufficient in determining if my downswing is 100% attributed to situation based variance.

After thorough hand history reviews today, I've discovered that the resulting downswings occurred 75% of the time while short-handed at full-ring tables and over adjusting ranges to be excessively loose.

Healthy Living/ Bodybuilding

The best way to cope with any downswing is a healthy measure of lots of hearty food =]. I decided to hit the buffet today and feast upon as much food as I can possibly ingest.

Unfortunately there weren't any decent dumplings or fried rice/egg rolls/ any other stereotypical Chinese food . . otherwise I'd jump on that obviously.

The month of August is almost 100% attributed to me bulking up, after a thorough 3 weeks of training with heavy weights and eating regularly between 2600-3500 calories intake a day I've gained a good 3-5lbs of mass.
It's hard to say whether or not the 3-5lbs were muscle or fat or even a 1:1 ratio, however definition has decreased slightly but was exchanged with a significant increase in strength as well as endurance.

I have a tendency to not like doing a ton of ab-work. . . generally speaking it feels very unnatural, rumor also has it abs are made in the kitchen which sounds about right to me.

There's approximately another 2 weeks left in August at which point I will evaluated my strength and muscle mass and decide if cutting down to a very lean, or perhaps bulk up a tad bit more.

I find a lot of people are a lot happier when they are bulking up as it is easier to eat a lot but harder to cut down eating. I find them equally as hard at this point since both phases require discipline whether it is eating a lot or cutting down calories, and of course the food I'm eating has to primarily come from good sources of ''non-Junk'
And Finally Desert.

And yes, this was all for lunch.

Aug1-3 - World War Z, Fireworks, Food, Food,

Wednesday was really my off day that I didn't put in any hands.  On the other hand I did have lots of fun  having this amazing lamb-chops at a restaurant near Coal- Harbour.

Afterwards had a chance to see fireworks with a couple of friends @English Bay.
Also had a chance to rock out the new 'Out Door' pianos near Science World which despite being abused by kids smacking keys randomly. . . is relatively in-tune . . .

A 'Jazz/Blues' band I believe self organized themselves and started playing after I came back from dinner... was quite interesting and spent some time watching them

                                                                                    Thursday-

World War Z- went to theaters with friend of mine '' as it was her only day off.'' <--- psht. 9-5 jobs ;) .

To those who watch Walking Dead or zombie movies in general it's more or less same story line different actors different plot line kind of.

There were parts of the movie we burst out laughing. . . zombies can sometimes be very. . . 'DERP' & scary at same time.

Friday

._. last set always emphasize on the 'DEAD' in deadlift
Woke up super late as I was out late after fireworks with couple of friends afterwards. Decided to head to the gym and pump some iron and get the blood flowing before grinding it out.

Since I'm working on a split; the routine for Friday was Back + Biceps. Exercises were;
Seated Rows; Dumbbell Rows, Chinups, Deadlifts. Around 3-4 sets of each exercise.

In addition to my current 'cutting' diet once a week I do a 'Cheat-Day'/ kind of re-fueling glycogen storages and just helping me mentally deal with such shenanigans.
3 Piece Chicken + Large fries

Rack of Lamb
We start with; Post-Workout Shake, Post- Workout Meal. Post-Post workout meal.

I think all in all consumed something like; 4k calories this day...

After washing down all those calories with a medium chocolate frosty; we're ready to grind. . .
NOT.

Sugar/Carb Crashed hard. As you can clearly tell by the graph.

Was on fire mashing buttons and crushing everything in sight until 2/3 through the session when I started crashing, nearing the end of my session was feeling droopy and nearly fell asleep @ the grind station.

Lessons:
Never start grind session from 11pm-5am. . .
Never consume 2k calories just prior to grinding
Never continue grinding when already starting to crash.

Late Night Session-

Late night sessions. . . should probably be avoided.

Was about to call it a day after losing tree-fiddy. . . but figured a heavy bag session and a 3km jog will help lighten things up.

Also figured since I was already behind pace by a bit this month a little bit of extra volume can't hurt, and considering the 100nl-Zoom Fullring games were running at 1am pst. . just absolutely irresistible!

One of the worst sessions I've had in awhile, not only did I get cooler situations left and right, was definitely not playing my A-game.

This brings my total downswing for today to -10bi's. Despite how common a 10bi downswing is, I felt it could've been easily minimized had I played a lot better.

Few situations where I kept trying to turn hands into bluffs. . .

Note for Tomorrow
1. Focus more energy on getting Value
2. Focus more energy on not bluffing so much.
3. Try not to get into pre-flop wars . . . [post-flop's where the money's at]

Unfortunate Day - Tree Fiddy

Due to the late night blogging of yesterday on my 'Homeless Interviews' today's grind sessions were cut short.

I mean, you can't always win. . . you just try and win more than you lose in the long run.

Day Graph

Started the day off really well, owning everyone in  sight. (Actually it was more like flopping the nuts on  every single table and getting paid off vs 2nd nuts.)

So far have been lacking in volume for the month. . . definitely going to try and kick it up a notch more tomorrow. Going to head to bed early and have a killer grind day tomorrow.

Shortly before my session ended, Butchen and I were getting into wars.

Chat box was hilarious when the river came a heart =), when he checked back on the turn, immediately put him capped on QK/AK.

Tanked a bit on the river, was thinking between betting or shipping. In hindsight probably shipping is better since it looks much scarier and isn't much more expensive.

The hand that broke the camel's back.
Then again. . . I didn't think he'd ever raise this river, so betting may just be the tad cheaper more +EV option.

I think I started to play a tad bit more aggressive the last couple days. . . a much more bluffing style.

Probably should pull back on that for a bit, and for the most part keep my aggression pinpoint.

Playing a super LAGGY game is actually quite very tilting, as opposed to a TAG or . . more passive game =X.
